The Forgotten World
Officially the highway runs from Stratford in the west to Taumaranui in the East. This history-rich 150 km route offers a stunning drive as it winds up, down, and around. Traversing five saddles, a republic, Taranaki’s longest road tunnel and the scenic Tangarakau Gorge, home to New Zealand's only section of gravel state highway.
Here at Smiles Per Hour, we love to go a bit rogue. As such, our journey along the Forgotten World takes an unexpected turn through Ohura, "the town the Forgotten World Highway forgot". A forgotten settlement with an unforgettable charm that keeps us coming back.
