Napier-Taihape Road
Between Taihape at the southern end of the Central Plateau to Napier in Hawkes Bay (or the reverse) winds a remote highway. Colloquially known as the Gentle Annie, this 150km road is beautiful. It is a delightfully scenic drive with ever-changing views as it goes up and down, around and around. Flanked by mountain ranges Kaimanawa Ruahine and Kaweka.
Travelling the route will encounter infrequent traffic, with a high percentage of trucks and occasional small settlements, though no opportunity for re-supply, so ensure you fuel up before leaving.
Halfway between (approx) Napier and Taihape is Kuripapango, A Department of Conservation reserve and campsite. Perfect for a quick dip in the river, an overnight stop or a destination.
Impressive points of interest on the route include the historic Springfield Suspension Bridge, spanning the Rangitikei River, 40km from Taihape.
