Lake Rotokare is a bird-nerd paradise with two walking options. 

A 1.5-hour lake loop is suitable for the whole family, or a 6-hour ridgeline loop for persons of higher fitness.

This 230ha predator-fenced forest sanctuary is open year-round and free for day visits. The lake is open seasonally for motorised craft. 

Expect to hear and see abundant birdlife, including Tui, Ruru (Morepork), Saddleback, Hihi, Kereru, North Island Robin, Eastern Rosella, Kiwi, Brown Teal and more.

Camping is limited but open to everyone from tent-based campers to self-contained vehicles, with a suggested donation of $10/night per person at publication. More details here.
